Of the billions of people on this planet, a very small percentage have attained enviable heights of success. Yet, every human being has the potential for greatness, but not everybody knows what to do to fulfil them. You have probably been told before, “Hey, you’ve got a lot of potential.” You might be reading this article because you are looking for some advice on how to be at your level best so that you, too, can achieve the same level of success that others have attained.
Here are simple tips that will not turn you into a superhuman, but will certainly awaken the giant within you:
Take Care of Your Body
There is a well-known Latin aphorism attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher, Thales, that goes, “mens sana en corpore sano.” This literally means “A sound mind in a sound body.” In other words, you need to be healthy, both physically and mentally, in order to function at your personal best.
Make sure that you get proper nutrition. Make sure that you eat a well-balanced diet. Avoid too much sugar. Sugar has been dubbed as “white poison” and has been linked with a lot of health problems such as diabetes, depression and obesity. Eat complex carbohydrates, lots of fruits and vegetables and protein from healthy sources. You can take some vitamin supplements if you are not sure that you are getting enough nutrients from the food you eat.
Also, get enough exercise. Exercise promotes circulation and makes nutrients and oxygen more available to the cells in your body, including your brain cells. Also, when you exercise, your body releases endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals which will energize you.
Nurture Your Mind
You do not have to go to a university to get an education. You can educate yourself. Since the advent of the Internet, there has been a vast store of learning resources. You can even download some books for free. If you do not have Internet access, you can go to your neighborhood library to read books, newspapers and magazines.
Watch what you feed your mind. Limit your time in front of the television. It is called the “boob tube” for a good reason. Nowadays, there is a lot of junk on television. Do not feed your mind with junk and be selective with the programs you watch. Keep your mind active. Your brain is like a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
Release Your Creativity
Creativity is your birthright. Highly creative people were not born with a special set of genes. They just learned how to develop their creativity and refused to be fazed by ridicule and criticism. Know that you have the ability to be creative. You just need to be courageous and be willing to take risks. How do you develop your creativity? Look for opportunities to be creative. Find a problem and explore the many ways to solve it. Find new ways of doing things. Look for ways to express yourself through art.
Develop a Positive Mental Attitude
You need to have a positive attitude or else you will easily give up when things go wrong. Having a positive mental attitude is not being “Polly Anna-ish.” You must have a firm grip on reality and know that bad things do happen. However, you should also realize that problems are temporary and obstacles are meant to be stepping stones, not stumbling blocks. When bad things happen, instead of asking why, ask what you can learn from it. Find the gift behind the pain and the lessons behind every failure and you will emerge a better, stronger person from every ordeal that you may have to go through.
Courage is the ability to face fear and act despite being afraid, not the absence of fear. You need courage in order to grow. The fear of the unknown is normal. However, you have to overcome this fear so you can reach new heights and go to places that you have never been before. To be able to grow, you need to step out of your comfort zone.
Even the greatest people in history have mentors or coaches who are often lesser known or less accomplished than their proteges. Alexander the Great had Aristotle. Leonardo Da Vinci had Verocchio. Beethoven had Christian Neefe. Nadia Comaneci had Bela Karolyi. Manny Pacquiao has Freddie Roach. The list of highly successful with mentors could go on and on.
Mentors do more than teach. They monitor your progress and see where you can improve. They hold you accountable and keep you on the right track. Having a mentor keeps you grounded and humble and prevents you from becoming complacent. If you can find a mentor who can bring out the best in you, then consider yourself a very lucky person.
Be With People Who Support You
Nobody succeeds alone. You need people who can help you especially when the going gets tough. You need the guidance and help of mentors. You need friends who believe in you and cheer you on. You need emotional and moral support and, at times, even financial support. They say that it is lonely at the top, but actually, it is not if you remember those who helped you get there.
